The failure case, priced
Every fee page on the internet prices the sale. Beginners should price the other case first: the shop that never sells. It has exactly two costs — the one-time setup fee, and the listings, renewing — and both are knowable to the dollar before you open.
Fee policy checked: October 21, 2026
A listing costs $0.20 and lives 4 months. A listing that never sells still expires — and if you renew it (or your catalogue auto-renews), it costs another $0.20. A year of keeping a listing alive is therefore 3 × $0.20 = $0.60, per listing, sold or not. Add the one-time shop setup fee of $15–$29 (it varies by country and period; current tutorials cite both ends) and the failure case is simple arithmetic:
| Catalogue size | 12 months of renewals | Plus setup fee | Total cost of selling nothing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 listings | $6.00 | $15–$29 | $21–$35 |
| 20 listings | $12.00 | $15–$29 | $27–$41 |
| 50 listings | $30.00 | $15–$29 | $45–$59 |
| 100 listings | $60.00 | $15–$29 | $75–$89 |
Optional subscriptions (Etsy Plus at $10/month, Pattern at $15/month) would add $120–$180 a year to a shop that sells nothing. They are never required, and a pre-seller should buy neither. Your evenings are a cost too, but they are yours to price; the table is the part with a dollar sign the platforms already know.
Because the standard beginner advice — "list 50 to 100 items so the algorithm notices you" — quietly prescribes the most expensive version of the failure case, before any framing has been tested. Ten listings of a verified framing risk $21–$35 if nothing sells. A hundred listings of an untested one risk $75–$89 to learn the same lesson. The pre-flight exists to test the framing before either number is spent: run it free, read the structures that can't work, then open the smallest shop that tests the idea honestly.
The Etsy Entry Kit turns a verdict into a launch: the narrowing playbook that takes a DON'T or a NARROW to a specific-enough idea, the listing-launch checklist, the fee-proof pricing worksheet, the first-10-listings plan, and the beginner mistakes fleet in checklist form.
