Mistakes, caught one step earlier
Every other mistake list assumes the shop exists: the fees are paid, the listings are up, the damage is done. The expensive mistakes are all made before opening, in the framing and the pricing. Here they are while they are still free to fix.
Mistake 1
Beginners price what feels fair, then meet the math: listing + 6.5% + 3% + $0.25 per sale, and 15% more when an ad brings the buyer. Price from the floor up — your break-even is (cost + $0.45) ÷ 0.905, and the ad-safe version is (cost + $0.45) ÷ 0.755. The fee page works it at real prices.
Mistake 2
"Cute stickers," "funny shirts," "planner" — framings shared with thousands of shops, competing for the same page one. The fix is one act of naming: the buyer, the moment, or the material. The saturation page shows the five lines.
Mistake 3
Gurus prescribe 50–100 listings. At $0.20 per listing per 4 months, a 100-listing shop that sells nothing burns $75–$89 in a year — and a big catalogue of an unproven framing is just the same mistake at scale. Ten listings of a verified framing beat a hundred of a hope.
Mistake 4
On Etsy the trap is supplies and blanks bought for an idea whose math was never run. Run the verdict first; the dead-at-any-price page lists the structures that cannot work at any level of effort.
Mistake 5
If the article telling you "it's not saturated" is published by a company that sells what new shops buy, you have not read research. You have read a funnel. Check who profits from your opening before you weight their answer.
Mistake 6
Ten minutes on Etsy — the search suggestions, the result counts, page one's review wall and price floor — tells a beginner more than a month of videos. The checker walks you through it signal by signal, with thresholds, and folds what you saw into the verdict.
The Etsy Entry Kit turns a verdict into a launch: the narrowing playbook that takes a DON'T or a NARROW to a specific-enough idea, the listing-launch checklist, the fee-proof pricing worksheet, the first-10-listings plan, and the beginner mistakes fleet in checklist form.
Included in the $39 Etsy Entry Kit
For people who have not opened an Etsy shop yet. Nothing you answer leaves your browser, and there is no email box at the end. The verdict is a visible rubric plus published fee math — this site holds no live Etsy data, and it will never hand you a made-up crowding number.
